Zyax AB have officially joined the Zigbee Alliance for all its products.

What is Zigbee?

ZigBee is an open global standard for wireless technology designed to use low-power digital radio signals for personal area networks.

Its has been around more than a decade and is widely considered as an alternative to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for low data transfer rate, energy efficiency and secure networking applications. Zigbee is based on the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Standards Association’s 802.15 specification. Its is built for control and sensor networks on the IEEE 802.15.4 wireless standard for wireless personal area networks (WPANs). A typical application can be for home automation, smart metering and industrial automation.

Zigbee for smart homes

The idea behind the smart home is that all the devices are connected and talking to each other and share information with each other and with you. For example, motion sensor talking to your lights to turn off when no ones is around or trigger coffee machine when the alarm goes in the morning. With ZigBee, the two devices – even if they’re from different manufacturers – speak a common language, so there’s no barrier to communication. Zigbee is perfectly suited for controlling home appliances remotely as a lighting system control, appliance control, heating and cooling system control, safety equipment operations and control, surveillance, and so on. A typical example is when you have a ZigBee-enabled light bulb and a ZigBee-enabled light switch and you want the light switch to control the light bulb.
